Return to a cordyceps-infested world, reimagine what survival looks like in a city overtaken by nature, and help shape a darker story with new environments, more devastation, and even higher stakes. Based on the acclaimed video game franchise by Naughty Dog, and created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, ‘The Last of Us - Season 2’ follows Ellie and Joel five years after the events of the first season, in a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind. Following our Emmy award-winning work on Season 1, DNEG was proud to return for the second instalment of ‘The Last of Us’. Serving as one of the lead VFX partners for the series, our teams helped bring a post-apocalyptic Seattle to life, rebuilding the city’s skyline and coastline with some of the most complex environment work DNEG has tackled to date. From ocean views to decaying landmarks, CG ivy, moss and overgrowth spreading across buildings, and iconic sites that were custom-built for large-scale destruction, our VFX team created expansive CG environments and dynamic weather systems that pushed our water and destruction pipelines to new limits. For the season's epic finale, our team delivered multiple water shots across different sequences with crashing waves, animated boats, digi-double soldiers and custom FX simulations, all set against a lightning storm that was unfolding in the city. ‘The Last of Us - Season 2’ pushed our teams further than ever before, with added layers of complexity to our VFX work and new creative challenges. We were thrilled to return to the post-apocalyptic world for a second season that further cements the show as one of the most successful video-game adaptations of all time.
