Animated Short Film: Then The Prince Arrived
In a land of magic and fairy tales there was a big castle hidden deep, deep in the forest. In the highest tower, a princess was waiting to be rescued by a handsome prince. The tower was also guarded by a fearsome and giant dragon. One day a brave prince finally arrived at the castle to slay the dragon, and maybe even more so, to win the princess. But the prince gets defeated and now the tender princess stand face to face with the dragon.
Above it's the story of the story, and below is a short story of how it was made and what we thought during the year.
Can we do a 3D short that looks like it was hand drawn? This was one of the starting points for "...then the Prince Arrived". It's a love letter to classical animation and it's highly inspired by classical Disney films. They way we tried to achieve this was analyze the old movies and use the new technology with Blender as our main tools.
One of the most powerful functions in Blender is freestyle and it's ability to create irregular lines that only movies when the character change position, this helped us a great deal when we had to stay on 2's and 3rd's. One of the other things we did was to use stepped convert curved animation to stepped animation to hold them for two or three frames, which is very common in traditional animation.
I know what some may have divided options about the characters design, hope you still like it. All backgrounds are rendered at first, then painted over, except for the first one.
